Dutch Culture (2025)

This work challenges the common view on Dutch culture and history. The dominant view of the Netherlands often relies on stereotypical traditional Dutch elements, such as windmills, tulips and clogs. This reimagination of a Delft Blue milk jug, referencing one of the most famous Dutch painting ‘The Milkmaid’ painting by Johannes Vermeer, adds elements of Dutch culture that are hidden away. Particular, Dutch culture as experience by people of the non-western world. There the culture of the Dutch are encountered through military forts and violence. Dutch colonialism had fundamentally shaped Dutch culture and has left traces of it across the world. This side of experiencing Dutch must never be forgotten.
