What gives a sense of home? Especially those of us belong to a diaspora, to multiple places at once, or none at all, what makes us feel at home?
Thinking about a moment that feels like home for me, I naturally had to choose food. Particularly this moment of Friday dinners at my childhood home eating Indonesian food from our favourite local restaurant, a place that has sadly recently closed. As homage to them, with in the back of my mind Li yuchen's question to be conscious of all the food I have received in my life.
Creating patterns out of homemaking rituals, representing all the meals I am grateful to have received. A moment of connection, to each other, to the earth, to my culture, to my ancestors.
As the gratitude and honouring of food continues, I created this altar. The colour and patterns from my childhood home. The smells of the ingredients that connect me to the land. The dishes of my family.
A moment of connection and collectiveness. The food that is home.
